The Deschutes River is famous for its native trout and steelhead populations. These red band rainbow trout and steelhead are an inland or desert race of native rainbow trout that have evolved within this desert environment. This means you will be fishing over very active, strong trout while enjoying our warm sunny weather without fear of sluggish summer fishing experienced in areas with coastal forms of trout and steelhead. Deschutes river fish give our clients the best of what fly fishing has to offer: great weather and even better fishing.
![]() Redside |
The renowned Deschutes River rainbow trout, are nick-named "Redsides," because of the brilliant red stripe on their sides." These red sides average 13 to 18 inches with the occasional fish up to 23 inches. Pound for pound, the red side is the hardest fighting fish I’ve ever caught. It’s not unusual to get into your backing fighting a 15 incher. | |
![]() Steelhead |
The lower Deschutes River is known as one of the finest dry line steelhead fisheries in the country. Native steelhead in the Deschutes average 22 to 29 inches, with the occasional 34 inch fish. These fish rise aggressively to a fly on the swing. We find steelheading to be best September through November. Once you’ve hooked a steelhead you’ll be hooked for life! |
